Abstract

The article examines one of the most important categories of medieval culture — the category of the miraculous — from the perspective of musical hierotopy, using the material of one of the key chants from the service to St. St. Peter of Moscow, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Russia, created at the end of the 14 th century by Metropolitan Cyprian. The objectives of the study include determining the correlations between the artistic organization of the selected Old Russian chant — the sticheron-slavnik at the praises Every city and country of the 6 th tone — its pragmatics as an instrument of socio-symbolic constructing, and the category of the miraculous. The author identifies several modes of this cultural category that are relevant for the analysis of the musical organization of the sung text as an auditory instrument for creating a “miraculous” / sacred space. The characteristics of the means of musical expression that determine the features of the artistic structure of the chant based on 15 th–17 th-century manuscripts allow us to formulate a thesis on the fundamental significance of the saint’s image as a miracle worker, bestowing healing “through the action of the Holy Spirit”, for the semantics of the musical and poetic text, as well as for the sacred space of the saint’s tomb in the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. The author concludes that the chant, through unique artistic means, implements various modes of construction, hermeneutics, modeling, and manipulation of the miraculous and is actively involved in the symbolic space of the cathedral’s altar area, decorated with frescoes after its rededication in 1479, becoming the center of veneration of the saint.
