Abstract
The article examines musical interpretations of the stichera to St. Clement, Pope of Rome, Today the Grace of the Holy Spirit has Gathered Us in Russian singing manuscripts of the 12 th to 17 th centuries. In the course of the research, it was established that this stichera is recorded only in notated books and has not yet been found in other church sources. The prototype of the stichera to St. Clement was the well-known hymn of the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem, which is repeatedly sung during this feast and is a greeting to Jesus Christ as he enters Jerusalem. The paper suggests that the occasion for the creation of the stichera was the ritual of venerating the relics of St. Clement in the Tithe Church, the main temple of Kievan Rus. Two early versions of the stichera have been preserved, each in single manuscript: one from the 12 th century and one from 1422. The motive of the miracle and the perception of St. Clement as an apostle of Kievan Rus are clearly traced in them. In the 15 th–17 th centuries, in the chants of the Znamenny chant, possibly influenced by the treatises of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, a hierarchy of musical graphic-intonational formulas emerged, creating intertextual connections based on practical theology. The arrangement of sign complexes according to the text created new meanings, rhyming one of the themes of the stichera with identical formulas. At this time, a third version of the stichera appeared in two editions, one from the 16th century and the other from the second half of the 17 th century, in which the idea of Blessedness in God of St. Clement, his union with God, comes to the fore.
