Abstract
This article makes available to Russian scholarship, for the first time, a corpus of German-language letters exchanged between the cellist-composer Johann Benjamin Gross (1809–1848) and Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and Raimund Härtel. On the basis of these documents, supplemented by fresh biographical findings, the author reconstructs a previously unexplored “Mendelssohnian” current within St. Petersburg’s musical culture of the 1830s–1840s — a current that originated directly from Gross’s own artistic and promotional endeavours. Gross’s predominantly chamber-instrumental profile, coupled with
his compositional legacy, decisively informs the classicist “code” of his musical persona, distinguishing him markedly from the most virtuosos who toured Russia at the time.
Keywords: Johann Benjamin Gross, string quartet, Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, St. Petersburg, Leipzig, concerts, musical capitals

Gross (Kassel, 2023), for the fruitful exchange of the documentary sources, for access to the original handwritten letters by Gross before their publication, and for providing audio recordings of his works.
