Abstract

The article is devoted to the four-hundredth anniversary of the famous Lüneburg composer Christian Flor (1626–1697) and to the discovery of his previously unknown works at the National Library of Russia. The life and creative path of the master, along with his contribution to the development of the traditions of the North German school, are briefly outlined. Original editions of his vocal and keyboard works, found in St. Petersburg, are presented. Special attention is paid to the work entitled "Todes-Gedancken" (1692). It is emphasized that it was specifically noted in Johann Gottfried Walther’s "Musicalisches Lexicon" (1732) as a contrapuntal composition for keyboard written “sehr künstlich” (“very artfully”), but for centuries it was considered lost. For the first time, its analysis and short comparison with similar works by Dieterich Buxtehude (1674) and Christoph Bernhard (1669) are carried out. It is concluded that Flor’s use of strict counterpoint in "Todes-Gedancken" became a form of musical embodiment of the theme of ars moriendi and the composer’s own reflections on death, the higher order, and the art of blissful dying. The provenance of the discovered source is identified as a donation of the book collection of Heinrich August Georg von Pott, the German officer and writer, one of the founders of the St. Petersburg Mineralogical Society, to the Imperial Public Library in 1862.
