Abstract

The article is devoted to the embodiment of the ideas of the “inverted” world and duality in the artistic and semantic field of the ballet The Seven Deadly Sins of the Petty Bourgeois by Kurt Weill, based on the libretto by Bertolt Brecht. The manifestation of these ideas is examined in the literary and musical components of the work, as well as in the history of the ballet’s creation and the features of its choreographic embodiment by George Balanchine at the premiere performance in Paris. The creation of the ballet took place in the context of a complex, “dual” creative relationship between its authors and the first performers: Edward James and Tilly Losh, Kurt Weil and Lotte Lenya, and Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. The effect of figurative and dramaturgical duality arises from the interpretation of the main character, who is portrayed by two performers: a singer and a dancer, and the ballet itself is characterized by a synthesis of genres through the inclusion of solo and ensemble vocals. The parable-like semantic duality inherent in Brecht’s poetry is reflected in the music through the gradual dramatization of intonations that originally belonged to everyday and entertainment genres. For the first time, the author defines the ideas examined as fundamental in the artistic text and dramaturgy of ballet, which opens up the prospect for the emergence of its multiple and diverse choreographic incarnations.
