Specialist Degree: 53.05.02 «Artistic Direction of Symphony Orchestra and Academic Choir»

Pre-requisite requirements:

  • General musical training
  • Diploma of complete secondary education (high –school diploma) or diploma from an accredited specialized music institution
  • Age: minimum age 18 years



Entrance examinations requirements:

1. A conducting technique demonstration (conducting session with piano)

A candidate is required to conduct a movement of a symphonic work (arranged for piano)

Beethoven – Symphony №№ 1, 2, 7 (I, II movements), Symphony №5, overtures: "Coriolan", "Egmont"

Borodin – Symphony № 2 (I, III and IV movements); overture and Polovtsian dences from the opera "Prince Igor"

Brahms – Symphony №№ 1, 4 (I and II movements).

Wagner - Overture to the opera "Rienzi"

Weber - Overture to the operas: "Oberon", "Evrianta", "Der Freischütz"(«Freeshooter»

Haydn - Symphony to applicant’s choice

Glazunov – Symphony №№ 1, 5, 6 (I часть); "Solemn overture"

Kalinnikov: Symphony № 1 (I and II movement)

Liszt - "Preludes", "Tasso".

Mendelson: Symphony № 3 (I and II movements), № 4 (II movement); ouvertures: "Fingalov Cave", "Ruy Blaz"

Mozart - Symphony to applicant’s choice (selected movements), overtures.

Mussorgsky - Introduction to the opera "Khovanshchina"("Dawn on the Moscow River")

Myaskovsky – Symphony № 27 (II movement)

Prokofiev - Symphony № 7 (II  movement).

Rimsky-Korsakov - Capriccio Espagnol.

Khachaturyan – suite from the ballet "Spartacus", "Gayane"

Tchaikovsky - Symphonies №№ 1, 2, 5 (I and II movenets), String Serenade.

Schubert - Symphonies №№ 4, 5, 8  (I and II movements).


2. Musical ability assessment.

A candidate is required to identify:

  1. the key of a chord in relation to a given pitch not used in the chord;
  2. melodic intervals both simple and compound (over several octaves), one tone followed by another, as a «chain of intervals»;
  3. harmonic intervals (simple and compound).



Russian language:

1. Written test
2. Writing a summary of the text read aloud
3. Reading and retelling a text
4. Presenting a short report on one of the conversational topics
5. Brief conversation with the teacher on one of the everyday topics

Knowledge of Russian at the Intermediate level (Test of Russian as a Foreign language. First Certification level).
