A graduate of the Leningrad State Conservatory where studied under professor O. Evlakhov. The world of instrumental music is most proximate to the composer (he has also graduated from the Conservatory as a cellist) is the area where he expresses his most intimate and deep ideas, where conceptuality directs the logic of the development of form.
Conceptuality as a method extends on vocal and choral music. It is realized above all in the sphere of poetic imagery as well as it conquers and organizes the music as a whole. A vivid example of this is vocal cycle “The hour of soul” to the lyrics of Marina Tsvetaeva, where different faces of the inner world collide into a fine image of the Poet.
Already three decades lasting work with the cinematograph has become second side of the musical art of the composer. Vladimir Sokolov has written music to over two hundred popular - science films. The movie “Vologodsky romans” (“Vologda romance”) directed by A. Sidelnikov, music by V. Sokolov has been awarded the highly acclaimed prize “NIKA”.
