Pre-requisite requirements:
 

  • Diploma of complete secondary education (high –school diploma) or diploma from an accredited specialized music institution
  • General musical training
  • Age: minimum age 18 years

Ethnomusicology

Performing a programme

An applicant must

  • perform three examples of traditional folk music (vocal and/or instrumental) in ethnographically authentic specie;

 

  • submit the programme in written form (up to 20 pages in the Russian language); the programme must include: musical staff line notation of the examples performed;

 

  • submit the text in verse of the examples performed (in original language and Russian language translation)

 

  • give information on the source of the examples performed (region, period, folk music performer, collector, reference to the published materials)

 

  • give short characteristic features of the genre and music style of the examples (information on the situations of usage in tradition; content of the lyrics, specificities of composition,   mode/harmonic and rhythmic organization of the song/ tune; description of performer’s methods).

 

  • answer the questions on history and theory of traditional folk music culture, and problems of folk music performance.

 

 

An applicant must show ability for music, singing skills and/or folk instrument skills. In the written text of the programme a candidate must follow layout rules of folk music notation, rules of musical staff line notation, ability to translate the text to the Russian language, ability to operate scientific terms and methods of folk music analysis. An applicant must show knowledge of theoretical problems of ethnomusicology and ability to hold discussion.

 

Russian language

1. Written test
2. Writing a summary of the text read aloud
3. Reading and retelling a text
4. Presenting a short report on one of the conversational topics
5. Brief conversation with the teacher on one of the everyday topics

Knowledge of Russian (Test of Russian as a Foreign language. First Certification level).

 

 

Preparatory Course

An applicant must perform two examples of traditional folk music (vocal and/or instrumental) and demonstrate awareness of specific issue connected with chosen repertory.

 

Colloquium

An applicant must answer questions on history and theory of folk music.

 

Russian language

Knowledge of Russian (Test of Russian as a Foreign language. First Certification level).
